The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) was officially incorporated on November 1, 2007, and began operating in 2008.
The organization was founded to represent the interests of residents living in Downtown West Palm Beach and to provide a forum for information sharing, community engagement, and advocacy on issues affecting the downtown residential community.
The DNA was formed with nine board members, along with several spouses and residents, for a total of approximately 15 original members. The formation of the organization was championed by Tim Harris, Howard Pincus, and Clint Fowlkes, with the assistance of then-Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Executive Director Melissa Wohlust. Kathleen McPhillips also played an important role in the organization's early development through her advocacy at DDA meetings during 2006 and 2007, helping build awareness and support for a resident-led downtown organization.
The DNA's first president was Tim Harris. He was succeeded by Howard Pincus, followed by Clint Fowlkes, Michael Cuevas, Cynthia Nalley, and Sitima Fowler, who has served as president since January 2023.
From its founding through 2023, the DNA received financial support from the Downtown Development Authority (DDA). In 2023, DDA funding was discontinued, and the organization transitioned to a self-funded model. Today, the DNA relies on membership dues, sponsorships, donations, fundraising events, and community partners to support its operations and programs.
The transition to a self-funded model marked an important milestone in the organization's history and strengthened its independence as a resident-led association.
Since its founding, the DNA has expanded its communications and outreach efforts to include a website, social media channels, and a monthly newsletter distributed to thousands of residents, business leaders, and city officials. The organization has also hosted numerous resident events, educational programs, and community meetings while advocating on issues affecting Downtown West Palm Beach.
Today, the DNA continues to serve as a resource for downtown residents by providing information, fostering community connections, and representing resident interests on matters that impact the quality of life in Downtown West Palm Beach.
The DNA recognizes and thanks the many residents, volunteers, board members, sponsors, donors, and community partners who have contributed to the organization's success since its founding.
